DA celebrates birthday of an extraordinary elderly
Mavis Nomvula, who turned 60 on 15 October, is no ordinary Cosmo resident
DA City of Johannesburg Caucus leader, Councillor Leah Knott joined the PR councillor for Ward 100/114 Belinda Echeozonjoku and other activists to celebrate the birthday of an elderly woman in Cosmo City.
Mavis Nomvula, who turned 60 on 15 October, is no ordinary Cosmo resident. According to Belinda, Mama Mavis, as she’s popularly known, is a loyal DA member who formed the party’s structure in the area.
“She started the DA in Cosmo City many years ago and was also instrumental in the growth of the party,” Belinda explained.
To appreciate her resilience for activism, she was thrown a surprise birthday.

“It was such a humbling experience for us as DA Ward 100 activists to celebrate Mama Mavis’s 60th birthday with her. Yoh, the stories she told us of the difficulties in her starting days were amazing to hear. She also said that she does not regret any of them and she’s still ready to continue to fight for the people,” Belinda reflected on the visit.
She went on to thank Leah for taking time out of her busy schedule, and Councillor Judith Madiakgotlafor sponsoring the wonderful cake (decorated in DA colours).
As International Day of the Elderly Persons was observed at the beginning of October, Belinda said they planned to celebrate more elderly people before the end of his month.
