Hairdresser raises funds for breast cancer NPO

Motorists and quick-shoppers were lured into the vibrant and colourful stand to either shave off, spray or get a Henna tattoo to support this great initiative.

The Caltex Garage on Christiaan de Wet Road in Honeydew offered more than just fill-ups and refreshments at their Fresh Stop convenience shop on Saturday, 17 October.

The business offered Hair by Ursula, a beauty salon based in Mindalore North, Krugersdorp, the venue to host a breast-cancer charity drive to raise funds for Reach for Recovery, an international non-profit organisation that promotes breast cancer awareness.

The beautician, Ursula Smit discussed how the initiative came about. “My loyal clients asked me to support Reach for Recovery to raise awareness about breast cancer. So once I was convinced, I partnered with the filling station to host the event in a bid to raise funds for the organisation,” she said.

Lorinda van der Westhuizen, the Caltex general manager, whose station is no stranger to supporting local initiatives said, “What we are trying to do is to get the whole community involved in projects. We’ve partaken in the Women’s Day event and Heritage Day involving the local Community Policing Forum.”

Lorinda’s energetic staff showed support at their respective stations by wearing a touch of pink with their uniforms on the day.

Ursula also mentioned that these types of campaigns are important as they increase knowledge about the epidemic, while encouraging them to get tested for it.
