Free self-defence classes for 16 days of activism
According to Leilani, learning to protect yourself can give you newfound confidence and assertiveness.
Through her NPC Yellow For Survivors, rape activist Leilani Kuter strives to raise funds for organisations helping rape survivors and victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
Yellow For Survivors has gone a step further towards empowering women by offering free self-defence classes.
According to Leilani, learning to protect yourself can give you new-found confidence and assertiveness.
On 17 November Leilani reached a huge milestone when during a self-defence session, she allowed Gary Lewis who specialises in anti-rape techniques and women’s self-defence to touch (strangle) her throat.
“It was the first time in 28 years. I was very emotional at first but later during the anti-rape self-defence class it became easier. I feel very proud of myself,” said Leilani.
Gary is also involved in teaching woman and children anti-human trafficking skills to prevent kidnapping.
During the 16 days of activism against GBV, the free sessions are sponsored by Yellow For Survivors and made possible by SPAR.
The self-defence classes look at different codes, such as martial arts, boxing, and different fighting techniques, which includes Krav Maga and other self-defence techniques.

On Saturday, 28 November, the classes will be held at the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium in Ruimsig from 10am till 12 noon, and move on to Curves Strubens Valley on Tuesday, 8 December from 9.30am till 11.30am.
Members of the public attending the sessions are reminded to bring their own water and not wear jewellery.
To book for the session at Roodepoort Athletics Stadium the public is advised to email leilani@yellowforsurvivors.co.za or WhatsApp 071 883 3346 with your name and area.
