Lions Club receives much-needed donation for eye clinic

A total of 50 pairs of spectacles were collected for the Lions, who operate their Community Eye Clinic every Saturday morning at 82 8th Avenue, Roodepoort North.

The clarity of vision is a gift not only of the eyes, but of the mind. Helping people see the potential of discarded spectacles is the Lions Club and their Community Eye Clinic initiative.

The Lions Clubs of the greater Roodepoort area received the assistance of entertainment destination Silverstar, which encouraged staff and patrons to get involved. “Silverstar made a collection box and asked its staff to also bring in their old spectacles to add to those unclaimed from their lost property office,” said Rob McClarty from Roodepoort Lions Club.

A total of 50 pairs of spectacles were collected for the Lions, who operate their Community Eye Clinic every Saturday morning at 82 8th Avenue, Roodepoort North. “Lions remove the lenses from the spectacles and deep-cleanse the frames which are reused. Lions have lenses fitted to the frames chosen by the patient that fit their prescription requirements. A nominal fee is charged to help defray costs of lenses supplied,” explained Rob.

People in need are able to visit the Lions Eye Clinic any Saturday between 9am and 11am to be guided through the process. Anyone wishing to donate old spectacles or get involved in the initiative is asked to contact the nearest Lions Club for details.
