Worry not about holidays at the seaside because this town has its own breath-taking outdoor venues to consider.

The Roodepoort Record/ Northsider takes a look at some of the municipal and private-owned outdoor facilities that one can visit during the festive period.

Kloofendal Nature Reserve — This particular facility is perfect for nature enthusiasts as it’s rich in cultural heritage and ideal for ecotourism. This 128ha park was one of the first nature reserves in Joburg and offers urbanites a retreat from city life. The area has a high conservation value, with the natural environment representing a transition zone between the Bankenveld, Drakensberg and Savana ecosystems.

Hamerkop Bird Sanctuary — Located in Florida Lake, Roodepoort, the sanctuary is part of a wetlands situated west of Florida Lake (another place to visit). It belongs to the municipality and falls under the jurisdiction of the Wetlands Department and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ). It is the perfect destination for bird and nature lovers.

Silverstar — This venue is the largest entertainment kingdom on the West Rand, offering loads of fun and a great deal of entertainment. Apart from the exquisite indoor restaurants and gaming centres, there is also has a beautiful outdoor arena that is usually transformed into a beach set-up during the festive season.

The Water Sisulu Botanical Garden – You cannot think about public facilities in the area without considering the garden. Facilitated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), the garden is the perfect venue for a serene picnic, bird watching or trail walking amid indigenous plants and wildlife. The garden also features the attractive Witpoortjie Falls, and provides a breath of fresh air to the jaded holiday-goer.

Swimming pools — The City of Johannesburg has built at least five public swimming pools for residents of Roodepoort. These pools, situated at Florida Lake, in the Roodepoort CBD, in Davidsonville, Florida North and Little Falls, are a suitable facility if you cannot afford a trip to the coast.
