Illegal connections removed to assist Joburg Water project

Report illegal connections to Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or City Power's Fraud Hotline on 0800 003 251

Ensuring the maintenance of public infrastructure requires efficient coordination between public entities.

City Power assisted Johannesburg Water on 13 January by removing illegal electricity connections along Progress Road approaching Nick Toomey Boulevard. Johannesburg Water needs to repair infrastructure in the area and the illegal electricity connections are hampering their efforts.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, confirmed their crews were on scene, stating, “We removed illegal connections that were running around and inside Joburg Water pipes to the nearest informal settlement. This was making it difficult for them to repair the leaks there. Our work was to assist them by removing the illegal wires to ensure their safety while doing their work.”

The bulk of the work has been concluded but motorists are urged to remain alert when using that section of Progress Road. Those responsible for connecting the illegal electricity infrastructure are notoriously efficient at replacing them, so should a member of the public witness such acts, they asked to report the incident to Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or City Power’s Fraud Hotline on 0800 003 251.
