WATCH: Spectacular proposal over the N1
There is little that comes close to the frustration of being stuck in peak-hour traffic, but for a few early-morning commuters, a spectacular display of love lightened their spirits.
There is little that comes close to the frustration of being stuck in peak-hour traffic, but for a few early-morning commuters, a spectacular display of love lightened their spirits.
Some time between 7am and 8am on 30 March, commuters stuck in traffic on the N1 North highway were witness to a very public display of love as two kindred spirits agreed to spend their lives together. Budding politician Zoné Niemand was going about her morning routine as usual, preparing for what her father (Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand) had told her was a campaign meeting in Bruma. Gert had told his daughter that traffic on the N1 South-bound was horrendous that morning, so they needed to take the N1 North to Bruma.
Watch here:
She thought nothing of it until a sign hanging over the highway on the Fairlands footbridge, with some of her closest family and friends standing behind it, caught her attention and changed her life. Written on the sign were the words, “Zoné, will you marry me?” Gert then admitted to his daughter that there was no meeting, and he was taking her to the bridge to give Kobie Hughes, the love of her life, an answer to his question. In tears, 23-year-old Zoné walked across the bridge to answer the life-changing question and despite the giant sign, Kobie, 25, stuck true to tradition and still got down on one knee. The cars passing below the bridge pressed down on their hooters in support, all seeming happy at the beautiful display overhead.

Zoné said she was blown away by the proposal; she knew he was planning something because Kobie has never really been able to keep a secret from her, but she definitely didn’t expect a proposal. Zoné and Kobie have known each other for almost 11 years, having met in school in 2010, but it was only a year ago that they started exploring their relationship in a more romantic way. Bonding over their shared sense of humour and caring natures, these two fell head over heals a lot faster than they expected. Together, they plan to grow in their professional and personal lives, he as a business owner and she as a politician.
