WATCH: Feeding time in the Garden
Photographer, Shane Wilken managed to take the breathtaking footage of one of the most majestic birds of prey enjoying a kill.
On Sunday, 28 March, Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) photographer, Shane Wilken climbed to the visitors’ favourite spot at the top of the waterfall and recorded a small video of Makatsa, the resident female Verreaux’s eagle feeding on what seemed to be a scrub hare.
Making use of his Sony camera and a 150–600mm lens, he managed to take the breathtaking footage of one of the most majestic birds of prey enjoying a kill.

One of the eagle followers asked if the video was taken using a drone, and Shane was quick to indicate that no ways are drones allowed at the Botanical Garden. “We report all drone sightings to security here,” said Shane.
According to BEPR Chairman, Gerald Draper, the eagles are currently doing a lot of nest refurbishing, occasionally bringing in sticks into the nest and mating.
“Mating up to three times a morning is sure enough evidence that these eagles are full into the mating season, and I expect that we will have an early egg or two soon,” said Shane.
