Silver Audi stolen in Muldersdrift

"The dog poisoning, burglary and now the car being stolen; I don't think this is the end" — Wessel Swart

In the past two weeks, a Muldersdrift resident has had three separate incidents at his estate. Wessel Swart said his dog started convulsing about a week prior. Thinking that the animal had suffered a stroke, he took it to the vet where he was told it had been poisoned. Unfortunately, it did not survive.

On 4 May, while Swart was out visiting his daughter, his foreman called him and said he was being shot at. “I had the house broken into, and there was an attempt to steal my vehicle, a silver Audi A3,” he explained. He added that the perpetrators tried to drive the car but crashed it into a tree. The third and most recent incident took place on 6 May. The lock on his gate was cut and the silver Audi was stolen. His white bakkie had also been tampered with.

Housebreaking incidents and theft in the area are quite rife, especially on properties that are secluded and not well-it. Muldersdrift Police warn residents never to go outside when they hear strange noises or when their dogs start barking.

Station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mankhontsho Setlhare, gave residents the following tips:

• Join a neighbourhood watch group. They will assist in creating a good relationship with neighbours and reduce the risk of burglary.

• Never leave keys under doormats, flowerpots or in mailboxes.

• Trim the trees around your home to reduce cover for burglars.

• Consider installing a burglar alarm system.

Swart said he had opened a case with the local police following the recent theft of his vehicle, but he was not confident that that would have been the last incident at his premises, considering what had been happening in the past.
