Executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg passes away
City confirms passing of Executive Mayor Makhubo
It is with great sadness that the City of Johannesburg has confirmed that Executive Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo has succumbed to Covid-19.
Acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development Eunice Mgcina said in a statement that he passed away this morning (July 9), after being in hospital for a while.
“We had hoped that the executive mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be,” she said.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother, and the rest of his family, friends and comrades.”
She added that the Office of the Executive Mayor and Speaker of Council will announce further details in due course.
The family has requested privacy and space as they process the untimely passing of one of their own. Mourners are discouraged from gathering at the home of the late executive mayor.
