Trezona stop ignored by motorists – a tragedy waiting to happen
At any given time, motorists can be caught skipping the stop sign – some at a speed close to 60km/h.
When a driver uses bad judgment while on the road, the consequences can be tragic. It is difficult to come to terms with the fact that you or people you love have been injured seriously or killed because a driver ignored fixed traffic signs or signals.
Thys Brits expressed his concern about numerous motorists simply ignoring the stop signs in both directions on Trezona Avenue at the Waveren Street intersection. Since the stop sign is right at Hoërskool Bastion, motorists’ failure to adhere to simple traffic rules can easily lead to a pedestrian accident.
During peak time, especially when parents are dropping off of fetching their children from school, motorists are doing as they please with no traffic police visible. At any given time, motorists can be caught skipping the stop sign – some at a speed close to 60km/h.
“One of these days a child is going to get hit by a car. Is that what it would take for the motorists to catch a wake-up? We should be proactive to prevent this from happening. Some sort of law enforcement should be put in place for these traffic infringements. It’s all about keeping the roads safe for the learners,” Thys said.
To add fuel to the flames, the area has seen increased traffic due to a new housing development further down Trezona Avenue.
“It is nothing more than bad driver behaviour. Firstly, each driver follows the one in front, so when the person in front skips the sign, the others are bound to follow. Secondly, none of the drivers expect the one in front of them to stop. So when one of them actually decides to stop, it might lead to a collision,” Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin said while observing the driving patterns at the intersection on the morning of Thursday, 9 September.
She subsequently requested the JMPD Region C Department Director to monitor the situation by putting up speed cameras there regularly. However, René is till awaiting feedback on the matter.
“This is the only way to identify the guilty and remind them that their actions have consequences. We have to act on this as soon as possible before someone gets hurt,” she concluded.
