Weltevreden Park swimmer excels at African Champs

The senior team was sensational in Ghana as they broke the African record that has been standing for the past 11 years.

Swimming sensation Leigh Mc Morran emerged victorious when she competed at the 14th CANA African Swimming Championship 2021 in Accra, Ghana from October 11 to October 17.

The Northcliff High School learner from Weltevreden Park competed in the pool and open-water swimming events where she achieved five gold and three silver medals.

Leigh achieved gold in the following individual races:

• 200m butterfly

• 800m freestyle

• 3km open water

The other two gold medals were achieved in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay where Leigh was part of both the junior and senior teams.

Her silver medals were achieved for the following:

• 1500m freestyle

• 200m freestyle

• 4×100 freestyle relay for juniors

The senior team was sensational in Ghana as they broke the African record that has been standing for the past 11 years.

According to Leigh’s coach Adrian Goate, highlights were her gold in the 200 butterfly, gold in the adapted 3km swim event, and most definitely her gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay where the team broke the championship record.

“Leigh has put in a lot of training to compete in Ghana. She was in good shape and performed well in all the events she was placed in,” said Adrian.

Leigh swims for Aqua Athlete and trains in 11 sessions a week under Adrian who is the current Open Water National Elite and Elite Youth Coach.
