Elderly couple dies on Hendrik Potgieter
Two vehicles crashed along Hendrik Potgieter Road, killing two people.
An elderly couple was killed in a head-on collision along Hendrik Potgieter Road on November 11. According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, a BMW collided with a VW Citi Golf and an elderly couple died on the scene.
Kyle van Reenen from Emer-G-Med said paramedics were met by the twisted wreckage of the Golf which occupied the width of the roadway. “Paramedics found two occupants, a male and female of approximately 85 years old, still inside the wreckage. The passenger, a female was found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene, while the man was found in critical condition. Advanced life support practitioners attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation; however, they were unsuccessful and the man unfortunately died on the scene.”

Van Reenen said the driver of the second vehicle did not sustain any injuries and was taken into police custody pending further investigations.
“The driver of the BMW, who appeared to be in his thirties, was arrested for drunken driving as well as culpable homicide,” Minnaar explained.
