Welties teacher bows out after 43 years
The veteran teacher plans to continue being involved in community work such as soup kitchens and other projects like giving extra lessons to learners in need.
In 1978 Magdalene Cullis walked out of college and started her teaching career at Rosewood Primary in Bonteheuwel in the Western Cape.
On Tuesday, November 30 Magdalene walked out from her current school for the final time after a teaching career that has spanned 43 years of pure dedication and discipline.
The experienced teacher started her career as a Physical Education teacher but made the decision to study further and enhance her skills in subjects such as Afrikaans and Geography, to name just a few.

The Weltevreden Park Primary School teacher revealed that teaching was her passion and she would always treasure the memories and satisfaction of having made a difference in children’s lives.
Between 2001 and 2003 Magdalene was seconded to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) as an educator on board their School on Wheels, namely Themba Edutrain.
She admitted that exchanging her normal classroom for a classroom on a fully equipped moving train was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Magdalene and her family sadly had to relocate to Gauteng and bid farewell to Cape Town. She took on a teaching job at Bernard Isaacs Primary where she worked until 2005.
“They embraced my expertise and dedication to the profession, and I enjoyed working with them but travelling was the reason why I wanted to teach closer to where I was and still is residing – in Weltevreden Park,” said Magdalene.
She started teaching at Weltevreden Park Primary in January 2006 and is very heartbroken that she has to say goodbye to her colleagues and school community.
“I love my sport. I was a sportswoman myself while coaching athletics, netball and cross-country. I would love to continue with sport because it is my passion.
According to Magdalene she enjoys the good feeling when walking in the malls and former learners would come up to her to share how it was a pleasure for them to be taught by her.
The veteran teacher plans to continue being involved in community work such as soup kitchens and other projects like giving extra lessons to learners in need.
“I want to plough back into the community, relax, travel, visit family and enjoy life,” said Magdalene.
