A frustrating issue for Witpoortjie residents presents an easy opportunity for cable thieves.
On Tuesday, January 4, residents were left without power following the theft of two feeder cables. Although one of the feeder cables supplying electricity to a portion of Witpoortjie was restored at around 17:00, the residents’ satisfaction was short-lived.
The thieves returned and attempted to steal the very same cables that had been restored, leaving the area without power again last night and this morning.
According to a statement by City Power’s Tebogo Sehlako, community unrest in the area is also affecting the restoration time. He assured residents that despite this their technicians are committed and hard at work to fully restore the power in the area. He also urged residents to exercise patience while the technicians are working on resolving the issue.
“Some residents are reporting that their electricity is on again, so let’s hope all will be restored. I have also reached out to the local security companies and they are on board to provide patrols and watch the area,” said Ward 71 councillor René Benjamin.
