The injection of youth to a stagnant struggle can bring a fresher approach.
Taking his seat as the youngest-ever council member is Ward 84’s new leader, Johannes Goosen. At 22 years old, the gentle-speaking, yet deep-thinking diplomat is eager to take on the challenges of his ward with a mix of humility, compassion and understanding.

Now a resident of Wilro Park, Johannes grew up in Alberton and had an early taste of local politics as a youth councillor in the area. Mentored by his then suburb’s ward councillor he went on to be part of the Democratic Alliance Youth Ancillary structure and has continued to be politically active since moving to the West Rand.
Attracted to the human element of politics, Johannes stated, “It is not about wielding influence but serving the interest of the residents”.
Outside of politics, the young council member is working on Information Technology degrees, something that may bring a modern tech-savvy approach to issues facing residents. Personally, Johannes identifies as a staunch feminist and is firmly committed to the pursuit of equality and a more just society.
“There needs to be less barriers to accomplishment as there are too many factors blocking opportunity,” he claimed.
Always taking an analytical approach, the new Ward 84 councillor is aware of the varying characteristics of each of his voting districts. “I treat each area uniquely. I am enjoying learning about the people in each suburb and I welcome any engagement from the people of Ward 84,” said Johannes, singling out the Roodepoort CBD as an area he would be especially keen to bring about improvements.
Not fazed by any chatter around his age, he is quick to state how he has been fighting against the odds from an early age.
“I had a difficult upbringing and have overcome many challenges that forced me to grow up quick. Age is but a number and I enjoy surprising people,” he said. Hoping to inspire the youth to get involved, Johannes concluded, “It all comes down to wanting to be part of something greater than yourself”.
