Nothing but love for our grandparents

Teachers and learners put on a show at Junior College Snuggles to celebrate and show some love to senior family members on Grandparents Day.

‘Gramps’, ‘grammy’, ‘ouma’ and ‘pops’ are just a few of the names we use affectionately for our beloved grandparents who were celebrated at Junior College Snuggles on March 17. Teachers and learners put on a show in Radiokop to celebrate and show some love to senior family members on Grandparents Day.

The celebrations began with a concert dedicated to the grandparents (and emergency babysitters) before the families relaxed with a picnic on the school grounds. Principal Megan Hunt said, “We are truly blessed to have our grandparents with us today. It has been a hair-raising past two years and I think the most frightening worry has been the safety and well-being of our grannies and grandpas. Those who live very far away and can’t be with us today, we wish you were here. To all those we have lost along the way, if I listen closely I can hear the rustle of angel wings and know that they are here with us.”

She said they were able to host the event with the grandparents because of the lockdown and Covid-19 restrictions had been relaxed.

Willie le Roux who was there with his granddaughter, Suné Bothma said the celebrations were lovely and that spending time with the kids is always a blessing. Mollet Nkala said, “It has been a great reconnection with the kids.” Sybil Wirth shared, “It was awesome and really special. I am so happy to have been here. I live in Botswana so I am really grateful to experience this with my grandson.” Sandy Chetty said she enjoyed spending some one-on-one time with her granddaughter. “It’s a great day to spend with just the grandkids and no one else. I really enjoyed the concert; everything is beautiful.”
