Die Ruiter’s own diamond in the rough

'He has never done something like this in his life, and out of nowhere, he just surprised everyone,'

Laerskool Die Ruiter Primary’s own diamond in the rough, Kgosi Matsoai recently went to the National Primary Schools Track & Field Champions with nothing more than pure determination and an air of humbleness.

On Friday, March 25 the talented Grade 5 learner held the names of both his school and his province high when he won third place in his high jump category.

According to Kgosi, he only started pursuing high jump some time last year when Covid permitted sporting events.

“Prior to last year’s event, we’ve had no sport whatsoever due to Covid, of course. What this little boy has managed to accomplish in less than a year is truly astonishing. He has never done something like this in his life, and out of nowhere, he just surprised everyone,” his coach, teacher Jean-Elize Marais said.

Those who have crossed paths with this young athlete would all agree that it’s not only his talent on the field that makes him stand out above the rest, but also his humble and helpful personality.

What this 11-year-old enjoyed most about the journey was the chance to jump his heart out, have fun and of course, make new friends.

Kgosi now dreams of placing first at the next SA Championships and can’t wait to start practising to reach this goal.

“We are super proud of Kgosi and his accomplishments. We trust that he will reach even higher heights, and we can’t wait to share the journey with him.” Jean-Elize concluded.
