On Sunday, May 1 a dramatic high-speed chase and shootout between the police and thugs ended in Florida with three suspects arrested and one dead.

According to a statement released by the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sophiatown Police came across a suspicious maroon Audi Q5 in Westbury while on patrol.

When the occupants of the vehicle noticed the police, one of them opened fire and the driver sped off while the police pursued them.

The high-speed chase came to a halt at the corner of Nadine Street and Albertina Sisulu Road in Florida when the suspects were forced to stop after a tyre had burst.

The thugs continued to fire but the police retaliated and three suspects were arrested. One managed to flee on foot while the other was declared dead on the scene.

None of the police members sustained any injuries and they later seized a firearm which was discovered to have been stolen in De Deur in January this year.

“The firearm will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic tests to determine whether it had been used in other violent crimes. The suspects will be subjected to profiling to determine whether they had been involved in other serious and violent crimes,” said Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

The suspects made their first appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, May 3 facing charges that included attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
