Petition to have Roodepoort CBD public toilets demolished

According to the affected businesses, the public toilet has been vandalised and used for drug abuse and as a dumping site by the nyaope boys in Roodepoort.

On Friday, June 17 Ward 84 councillor Johannes Goosen accepted a community petition in front of the public toilet facility in the Roodepoort CBD on Jeppe Road next to Sunshine Plaza.

Shopkeepers close to the public toilet petitioned for the facility behind Sunshine Plaza, the ABSA building and Shoprite to be closed and demolished, stating various reasons.

According to the affected businesses, the public toilet were vandalised and had since become a site for drug abuse and illegal dumping for the nyaope boys in Roodepoort.

A representative from Sunshine Plaza, Tajammul Patel explained to the Record that the public toilet was a security risk and a health hazard.

Another main concern was that some of the young people from the surrounding residential flats were lured into becoming active participants in drug abuse.

Goosen, who is a member of the Section 79 Petitions Standing Committee heard that the toilets had been in that state since 2018.

When the Record asked what would happen to the space after the toilets had been demolished, it was suggested that the premises be used as a parking area, or that a request be made to the banks to install an ATM as there is a shortage of ATMs in the Roodepoort CBD.
