Residents meet with officials to motivate for resurfacing their residential road

Residents claim inadequate patching has made the road a hazard to drive on

Residents of Van Damn Street are questioning why their street has been neglected.

Roads leading into Van Damn Street as well as many in the vicinity have all been resurfaced, leaving residents wondering when it might be their turn. Ward 85 councillor Zoné Hughes met with concerned residents on September 7 to demonstrate that the matter was being taken seriously.

Residents noted how the road had required attention for over a decade and numerous complaints about the road surface have resulted in little more than patchwork. The street is otherwise well maintained by the residents, with flowerbeds and manicured trees lining the scenic street. The quiet suburban road is mostly calm but the new school nearby has made the road a popular thoroughfare for parents dropping and collecting their children.

An urban inspector from Citizen Relationship and Urban Maintenance (CRUM) was on hand to help Councillor Hughes compile a report. This documentation of the site visit will be sent to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to consider a way forward. She claimed she is in weekly contact with JRA and has raised the matter repeatedly. JRA was contacted on September 8 for an indication as to what was planned for the road but no response has been forthcoming.

Striving to provide the residents with adequate feedback, Councillor Hughes said, “I will try everything in my power to get it repaired. Any resident who logged or logs a call regarding the road should please send me the reference numbers so that I can compile a report with it. The more it gets reported the better the chances of it being attended to.”
