Roodepoort — The cost involved in cleaning up and getting rid of illegal dumping is exorbitant and could be better utilised by delivering other desperately required services in the communities.
Illegal dumping has been a thorn in the side for not only the City of Johannesburg, but also its residents.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla told the Record that they have received numerous complaints from members of the public regarding this serious offence.
According to Fihla, JMPD has a dedicated team within the By-law Management Unit which was established to combat illegal dumping.
This team has been deployed to monitor and stop illegal dumpers, and when caught red-handed or traced they are issued a fine.
“We urge residents to report illegal dumpers by using the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline 082 779 1361.
“We also urge residents to take clear photos of the illegal dumping as well as the number plate of the vehicle, and send these pictures together with the date, time and location of the illegal dumping to the hotline.
“The By-law Management Unit will trace the offenders and deal with them accordingly,” said Fihla.
For the removal of illegal dumping call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or 0860-JOBURG to log a call.
