Doing laps for cancer survivors
'We can't wait to welcome back the community and its warriors, survivors and caregivers.'
While it might have felt as if the world was brought to a standstill by the devastating pandemic, life-threatening diseases like cancer wait for no one.
That’s why Cansa is excited to be hosting a Cansa Relay for Life for the first time since 2019. The special event will take place over the weekend of October 15 and 16 at Hoërskool Bastion.

“We can’t wait to welcome back the community and its warriors, survivors and caregivers. This will officially be the fourth Relay for Life held at Hoërskool Bastion, and for that we wish to sincerely thank the school,” event organiser Ester Pretorius from Cansa said.
The event will start at 18:00 on Saturday evening until 06:00 the following morning. As in previous years, community members are encouraged to enter in groups of 10 persons or less at a cost of R80 per person.
“The teams usually put up gazebos and coordinate funny costumes which make for great fun and laughter. They would then walk around the sport field and collect a bead for every lap completed,” Pretorius said.
Participants can also look forward to some good food and exciting entertainment to keep them awake throughout the night. There will be a variety of stalls to browse through.
According to Pretorius the event will be opened officially with a lap by all the survivors present after which their families and caregivers will join, followed by the rest of the supporters.
“When it gets dark supporters will have the opportunity to light a candle in a paper bag in remembrance or in support of a cancer survivor or someone they might have lost due to the disease. It has been tradition for many years,” she explained.
There will also be various prizes up for grabs, so teams are strongly encouraged to bring their A-game and have fun. Organisers Pretorius and Elize Serrao would also like to thank all sponsors – including President Hyper Krugersdorp and Hoërskool Bastion – in advance for their dedicated support.
If you would like to nominate a survivor to be part of the special event or if you want to find out more, Ester Pretorius can be contacted on 061 700 5000 or at epretorius@cansa.org.za.
