Caxton Johannesburg West shine at FCJ Awards
AVBOB, through their financial investment in the FCJ and media industry, showed its acknowledgement of the role of community journalists in society and its support of excellent journalism.
Sponsored by AVBOB and hosted at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, the Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) held their annual awards ceremony in person for the first time since 2019.
AVBOB, through their financial investment in the FCJ and media industry, showed its acknowledgement of the role of community journalists in society and its support of excellent journalism.
Two West Rand papers, the Roodepoort Record and Krugersdorp News were recognised by judges as being two of the best community publications in the country.

Roodepoort Record placed second in, and Krugersdorp News won, the Newspaper of the Year (Corporately owned free publication with less than 24 pages) category. Judges commended the Record for having a good balance between hard and soft news with a lively layout while the News was praised as having clever headline writing, lots of movement in the pictures and a clever use of features.

In the individual categories, the Alet Roux Award was for the first time in FCJ history won by the same journalist for the second year running.

The Alet Roux Award is given to a finalist in the Journalist of the Year category who has been in the industry less than three years, with the Roodepoort Record’s Jarryd Westerdale making it back-to-back trophies for 2020 and 2021.

The FCJ and the sponsors congratulate all the finalists and winners of the AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards 2021.
