Safety and fire prevention this festive season

Prevention is better than cure: Fire prevention and how to report it this festive season.

As South Africans gear up for the holidays, the air is filled with excitement and anticipation. However, amid the festive cheer, it’s essential to prioritise safety, particularly when it comes to fire prevention.

Prevention is better than cure: Preventing fires this festive season:

• Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas
• Ensure electrical appliances are in good working condition and switch them off when not in use
• Keep flammable materials like Christmas trees, away from heat sources
• Never leave the stove, heaters or TV unattended.

According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Service’s website, here’s what you can do in case of a fire emergency:

• Contact the emergency services control centre on 011 375 5911 or 112 if you are phoning from a cellphone
• Try to remain calm
• Give your name and contact details
• State the nature of the incident
• Indicate the number of people or vehicles involved
• Give your physical address and nearest corner or landmark
• Remain on the line as long as possible to answer the operator’s questions

Stay safe and avoid fires!
