The Horizon Karate Centre team performed exceptionally well at the National Karate Championships, held over two days in May at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.
The team bagged an impressive 42 medals, consisting of 16 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze medals.

This stellar performance comes after the team represented the province at the Gauteng Championships held in March and managed to bring home 77 medals.

The national championships saw a massive turnout of about 3 000 entries, with competitors from all nine provinces in South Africa, as well as international participants from countries such as Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Sensei Wendy Wannenburg (6th Dan), the centre’s instructor, expressed her pride in her students’ achievements.
“It is so rewarding to see my students grow and develop into hardworking individuals,” she said.
“The discipline and self-discipline that karate fosters are a necessary life skill in this modern world. Karate training is not just about tournaments and winning medals; it’s about moulding people,” she expressed.
