Poorte soars to victory against Wasps

The Roodepoort Rugby Club teams scored excellent results against Wasps as part of Gauteng Lion Rugby Union.

The rugby fields at Hoërskool Bastion were abuzz with excitement this past Saturday, June 21, as Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) clashed with Wasps in a thrilling match as part of the Gauteng Lions Rugby Union.

The results were overwhelmingly in favour of Poorte, with all teams, except the U19s, emerging victorious. The first team dominated the match, winning 33–12, with Herman Ley and Brandon Benningfield being named men of the match.

The first team’s scrum game was unstoppable, and they managed to score three tries in quick succession, and they led the match 21–0 just 20 minutes into the game.

“Our scrum demolished the Wasps so much that most of the match was played with uncontested scrums after two of their props left the field with injuries,” said club director Victor Volschenk.

The Sables (second team) also had a tough but triumphant match, winning 22–13. This victory takes the team to the top of the log with a seven-point cushion between them and Harlequins, setting the stage for a thrilling top-of-the-log clash against Harlequins next week.

The U21 team was unbeatable, winning 64–0, and the U19s had a tough day, losing 52–6. Despite this, they remain firmly in fourth position and are still in the running for a semi-final spot.

Victor says the overall performance of the teams was impressive.

“We’ve won nine out of nine in the league and scored the maximum five log points in every match,” he said, highlighting the 1st team’s dominance.

Poorte is currently leading the log in all three winning teams, with the 1st team, Sables, and U21s all occupying the top spot. The U19s, despite their loss, remain in contention for a semi-final spot.
