Organisation celebrates elderly citizens in Fleurhof
Phakamisa Elderly hosted an appreciation day for elderly citizens aged 80 to 90 years and older.
‘Wisdom, grace and golden years’ was the heartfelt message at the Phakamisa Eldery 80 to 90 years appreciation day, a celebration honouring the strength, wisdom and lasting legacy of senior citizens who paved the way for future generations.

Phakamisa Elderly is a non-profit organisation (NPO) founded by Penny Sipango, which has, over the years, advocated for elderly citizens in Fleurhof, Jerusalema, Florida and some Soweto areas.
The organisation aims to promote healthy lifestyles through activities such as sports, gym, choir, games, etc, targeting the elderly. The NPO does health awareness campaigns to prevent elderly abuse and the spread of disease, working in collaboration with stakeholders such as social workers, police, clinics and the community.
Under the theme ‘Honouring our living legends’, the gogos and mkhulus were beautifully dressed as they gathered in celebration of their lives, contributions and the invaluable role they continue to play in the community.

The day was filled with activities such as choir, delicious food, elder testimonies, health screenings, and talks from different stakeholders targeting topics such as financial literacy.
“We wanted to celebrate our senior citizens and make them feel loved and taken care of. This event is also part of our awareness campaigns to prevent elderly abuse, neglect and active ageing,” said Penny.
