World Cleanup Day: Join the movement

Florida Block Watch has called on residents to join them in conducting a massive clean-up operation at Len Rutter Park.

The Florida Block Watch (FBW) is planning a massive clean-up operation in Len Rutter Park on October 19.

According to FBW chairperson John Kirsten, the operation was initially timed to coincide with World Cleanup Day, which is officially celebrated on September 21.

“Unfortunately, severe weather conditions over that weekend made any such plans impossible to pull off. No one was going to come out on a freezing, wet and rainy day to clean a park, so we decided to postpone it.”

The operation, to be held in collaboration between FBW, Florida South Residents Association, Florida Park Neighbourhood Watch, Vumatel and local businesses including Mr Binn, Leandra Real Estates and Alf Stationers, will once again see workers from the KCCC Foundation joining forces with the local community for a good cause.

“Len Rutter Park is a valuable asset for the community,” says Kirsten. “It plays host to the wildly popular parkrun every Saturday. It is also the ideal place for a relaxing walk or a picnic, and a beautiful patch of nature right in the middle of our neighbourhoods.

“The plan is to come together as a community to ensure that Len Rutter Park remains an asset for all of us. I am excited for us as a community to get together and make a real difference.”

Kirsten has encouraged community members to join them on the day.

“Come along and join friends and neighbours in doing something that is for all our benefit.

“There will be boerie rolls and water. Refuse bags will be provided.

“All you need is sturdy shoes, a pair of gardening gloves and a hat to protect from the sun.

“If you can, bring a spade or a garden fork, a rake, or a panga to make the job easier.”

The clean-up crews will meet at the corners of Aandblom Street and Mcinerney Avenue from 07:30 on the day but residents who want to participate can join in at any time.

“We’re only planning to be busy until about noon,” he adds.
