Joburg Water’s neglect bring hazardous conditions

The year-long saga of unattended infrastructure problems on William Nicol Drive opposite Flora Clinic poses serious danger.

For over a year, residents have endured Johannesburg Water’s (JW) incompetence, leaving an unfinished water leak repair on William Nicol Drive opposite Life Flora Hospital.

A large hole with an unrepaired water pipe inside, located on the curve of William Nicol Drive has become a ticking time bomb, threatening the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Resident Caroline de Wet explains that each time JW switches on the water, the hole floods, spilling onto the street and creating a hazardous environment.

“This is a very steep and busy road, and the risk of accidents, especially when the road is flooded or when it rains, is a great concern. I have diligently documented the issue, reporting it to JW continuously, only to encounter silence.

“I have taken pictures and been reporting this for over a year, but nothing has been done. It’s infuriating to see such blatant disregard for public safety and infrastructure,” De Wet adds.

The situation is further worsened by an exposed and cut electrical cable hanging precariously from the unfished infrastructure. De Wet expresses that the cable has since not been replaced and worries for the safety of pedestrians.

As the rainy season has begun, concerns about flooding and electrical hazards will only intensify. The call for JW to take action on this matter is one of many in the Roodepoort area.

The Roodepoort Northsider has contacted the marketing and communications officer of JW, Nolwazi Dlhamini, for comment. A response will be published as soon as it is received.
