“Customers can confirm the credentials of our staff by contacting the Security Risk Management Control Room, their nearest City Power Service Delivery Centre, or their ward councillor to verify if any work is scheduled in their area. All City Power employees and contractors are required to carry and present their official ID cards while on duty,” the statement read.

These ID cards are colour-coded according to City Power’s various departments and include the following information:

• A photograph and personal details of the employee or contractor
• A contractor verification number (badge number) and expiry date
• A firefly hologram for added security
• Contact details for the Security Risk Management Control Room on the back of the card for easy verification:
Tel: 011 490 7900/ 011 490 7911
WhatsApp: 083 579 4497

The statement outlined the measures City Power is taking to prevent and respond to incidents involving impersonators.

“We are aware of the safety risks posed by individuals pretending to be City Power staff. We continue to educate customers on how to protect themselves and what steps to take before allowing anyone onto their property.”

City Power communicates with the public through official channels, including media statements, community alerts, infographics, videos, outreach programmes, and WhatsApp groups managed by councillors.

The statement added that City Power is working closely with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute those involved.

“City Power collaborates with agencies such as the South African Police Service and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to investigate and prosecute crimes involving our network, including theft, vandalism, and the payment of bribes to bypass or tamper with meters.”
