JW responds to sewage in Hoy Street

The entity says a service provider is appointed to fix this issue.

Johannesburg Water (JW) has responded to the ongoing sewage leak issue on Hoy Street in lower Discovery, confirming that they are aware of the problem and have previously deployed teams to address it.

Nombuso Shabalala, the spokesperson for JW, says the underlying cause of the issue is a broken sewer line underneath the railway line at a depth of 6m, which is complicated by the presence of a gas line and a water pipe from Rand Water.

Residents previously told the Roodepoort Record that this information is untrue; the sewer line runs parallel to the railway station.

To implement a permanent solution, JW is appointing a service provider to drill a new sleeve underneath the railway line about 45m to replace the existing line between manholes opposite the railway line.

“We are also aware of the potential environmental and health implications of the ongoing sewerage issue, particularly given its impact on the Hamberg dam, and will take the necessary steps to rectify the environmental impact,” she said.

Regarding measures to prevent future sewerage issues in the area, Shabalala stated that all sewer-related issues are being attended to, and that the entity’s teams conduct investigations to determine the cause and reason behind each blockage, implementing the necessary and effective method to unblock the system.

“We are committed to resolving this issue and ensuring that the sewerage system in the area is functioning properly,” said Shabalala.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the residents of Hoy Street and appreciate their patience and understanding while we work to implement a permanent solution.”
