Ward councillor takes petition of Florida Police Station to the people

Ward 70 councillor Caleb Finn's petition for urgent intervention at the station is gaining momentum.

Ward 70 councillor Caleb Fin took his petition requesting urgent intervention at the Florida Police Station to the streets.

The petition highlights a wide variety of problems at the station and calls on Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to step in.

On July 12, Finn was supported by Ward 85 councillor Zoné Hughes, who, together with a group of supporters, took to the busy intersection at Louis Botha Drive and Golf Club Terrace with placards inviting residents to stop and add their signatures to the urgent call for action.

“Sadly, it’s come to this,” says Finn. “But we have no other alternative.

“The situation at the station is dire. Our residents are not getting the support they need from our local police station, and it’s not because our officers don’t want to do their jobs. It’s because they can’t due to a lack of manpower and resources.

“Our detectives are forced to work from premises which is not a conducive environment for the important work they do.

“If we don’t stand together and do something about the situation, it is bound to get worse.”

At the Roodepoort Record’s visit, the councillors had already managed to add several signatures to the petition, with more residents turning up to add their names to the list.
