Illegal job seekers frustrate complex residents
What began as a job hunt has now turned into security fears and anger.
Residents of Willow Falls Complex are growing frustrated with the ongoing presence of illegal job seekers who loiter, dump waste, and sometimes engage in physical fights just outside their estate walls.
The residents allege to have made many calls to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) for help to address the issue, but their cries remain unheard.
According to a resident and caretaker at the complex, Atlegang Lebethe, the problem has worsened over the past year and is creating both a security concern and a poor public image for the area.
“It’s embarrassing, especially because that was brought to my attention by a resident,” he said. “I was just coming in and saw people beating each other up right in front of the complex. It’s just not a good look.”
Lebethe expressed concern about the impact of the situation on the complex’s reputation and the safety of its residents.
“I wouldn’t want to live in a place where there are random people outside all the time,” he said. “It’s the first thing you see when you arrive.”
The situation has become so dire that CCTV footage captured a recent violent fight outside the complex. Although the footage was shared with management and attempts were made to alert JMPD, no follow-up has been made.
Lebethe noted that while private security at Willowfalls is proactive, they are limited in what they can do.
“We’ve been told our private security can’t do anything outside the estate,” he explained. “So even though the problem is right at our gate, it’s technically not within their jurisdiction.”
The group of job seekers reportedly gathers outside daily, some hoping to be hired by customers at nearby shops. However, residents say the informal setup has gotten out of control.
“There’s even damage to the complex wall, and people are dumping rubbish.”
Residents and the complex management have been in contact with the residents’ association and business owners in the area to find a solution, but so far, no lasting changes have been seen.
The Roodepoort Northsider has approached JMPD for comment on this issue; however, no response has been received yet, and an update will be provided once available.
