Commuters urged to plan for possible protest action within Ward 70 on Thursday morning

Protestors to target all main routes in and out of Ward 70, which includes Florida, Fleurhof and Maraisburg.

Motorists could face a disrupted commute on Thursday morning, May 18.

Residents of Florida and Fleurhof plan to take to the streets to protest against what they believe to be service delivery failures. The protesters plan on blocking routes in and through Ward 70, focusing on Albertina Sisulu Road, Main Reef Road, and Ontdekkers Road where they pass through Florida, Fleurhof, and Maraisburg.

Those arranging the protest believe they have been ignored and will be awaiting the Mayor of Johannesburg’s appearance to address their concerns. The protesters want increased education and healthcare facilities, an end to illegal mining, the repair of damaged pipes spilling raw sewage in the Fleurhof dam, and the demolition of the Rand Leases hostel. In addition, they want a tougher stance on drug crimes in the area, a stable electricity supply, and improved safety and security in the area.

Organisers say the demonstrations will be peaceful and police and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department will be observing. The disruptions are set to begin in the early hours of the morning and organisers claim to be willing to maintain their action until they have been adequately addressed.
