South Road to be closed
Councillor René Benjamin gave guidelines for residents to use during the South Road closure.
Due to the Johannesburg Social Housing Company’s (JOSHCO) housing project and the laying of additional piping on South Road that is intended to feed into the main system, South Road will be closed until further notice.
According to Ward 71 councillor René Benjamin, the engineers have done the requirements and the contractor is only waiting for JOSHCO to sign off before proceeding with the work.
“The engineer needed to submit a report on what is required to be done in the laying of the additional piping to accommodate the overflow that would come from the new development into the existing system. This is to ensure that the system will be able to handle this overflow. Then based on this report, the contractor would have to do costing and submit it to the entity in charge of the project. Once the entity has approved the costing, the contractor will be able to proceed with the work,” explained Benjamin.
Councillor Benjamin has given an action plan for residents to use:
1. South Road, both lanes will be closed to traffic from the Rothchild Road cross section until the 4-way intersection with Rothchild Road.
2. The road will also be closed at the corner of Lieman Road to further reduce exposure to the road works on South Road. The residents on Lieman Road will be redirected to Sadie Road to access South Road via Rothchild Road.
3. The Sadie and Lieman Road cross section will be manned by a flag person, and basic flags and signals will be used.
4. The walkway will be moved right of South Road facing east. The walkway will be barricaded from the corner of Lieman Road to keep the pedestrians from the road works.
5. Alternative routes from South Road will be Rothchild Road. Traffic will be re-routed to Sadie Road as a detour, this should limit the traffic flow onto South Road and reduce the risk of any foreseeable incident or accident.
6. The landowner will need to be contacted by the Community Liaison Officer and the Client Agents.
7. Detour signs will be put up to offer traffic the opportunity to use Rothchild, Lieman and Prosperity Roads.
8. The excavated material close to the residential area will be used for backfill.
