Large truck crashes through small taxi rank on Ontdekkers Road

Witnesses say truck narrowly missed informal traders operating at the site.

Several bystanders had a brush with disaster when a large truck ploughed through a fence on Ondekkers Road on September 14.

The truck was travelling toward Florida past Ruhammah Drive at roughly 8.30 when the accident occurred just before the traffic lights used as a pedestrian crossing for Westgate Shopping Centre and surrounding businesses.

Witnesses say a taxi pulled out on the busy road and the large truck was forced to make an evasive maneuver, resulting in the truck crashing through the palisade fence on the business bordering the road.

The truck came within metres of hitting the informal traders but they escaped unharmed. No fatalities have been reported but multiple emergency responders were on scene to treat a small number of injured pedestrians.

The severity of their injuries is unclear and an update will be published when more information is available.
