Vehicle theft numbers climb on the Northside
Theft of, and out of motor vehicles has emerged as one of the most prolific crimes in the Northside.
Vehicle theft is one of the biggest crime challenges in the Northside.
This was revealed during the Honeydew Sector 3 CPF’s meeting held on Wednesday night, March 13 at the Strubens Valley United Church on Florin Road.
Information on crime was presented by Warrant Officer Molly Ramukosi from the Honeydew police, who stressed that vehicle theft, and theft out of motor vehicles is rife throughout the Northside. These crimes occur mostly at shopping centres, and mostly between 15:00 and 19:00.
Hotspots include Honeydew at Beyers Naudè and Juice Street and Blueberry Square, Retail Crossing in Strubens Valley, Kwena Square in Little Falls, and Featherbrooke Village in Ruimsig.
Numerous incidents have also been reported at Lazer Park.
Crime warnings released by the CPF stressed that vehicle theft is on the rise, with 45 cases reported within the Honeydew precinct during February alone. Seventy-two cases of theft out of motor vehicles were reported during the same period.
These incidents occurred mostly at shopping malls throughout Weltevreden Park, Honeydew, Little Falls, Wilgeheuwel, Randpark Ridge, and Northwold.
Other crimes of concern are assault, theft, and cable theft.
Ramukosi warned that fraud is once again becoming an issue in the area.
“Scammers target elderly people both in person and online,” she says. “Please do not share your details with anyone that you do not know.”
Honeydew Sector 3 CPF chairperson Anthony Beer briefly spoke about other challenges faced by the CPF and congratulated police on achieving faster reaction times of late.
