WATCH: Welties switching station up in flames

Authorities are currently investigating the cause.

A fire broke out at the JG Strydom Switching Station in Weltevreden Park this morning, April 11.

Information gathered by the Roodepoort Northsider from the scene indicates that cable thieves gained access to the switching station and somehow caused a fire.

Firefighters were quick to respond, putting the fire out before much damage could be done to the building.

A large electricity outage affected areas throughout the Northside from around 10:00, but there is currently no indication whether this was all due to the incident at the station, or if there were other factors that resulted in outages in other areas.

The affected areas included Weltevreden Park, Honeydew, Honeydew Ridge, Wilgeheuwel, and surroundings.

The Northsider approached City Power for answers, but was told that investigations are currently underway, and they will only be able to confirm the cause of the fire and resulting loss of power upon conclusion of their investigation.
