Wilrogate Checkers catches fire

A fire at Checkers in the Wilrogate Shopping Centre was quickly brought under control by emergency services personnel.

A fire broke out at the Checkers in the Wilrogate Shopping Centre on April 12.

According to bystanders at the scene, the fire started in the butchery of the store. It is currently suspected that the fire was caused by a generator, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Emergency services were quick to react and the fire was brought under control in short order, with minimal damage, except for smoke damage done to the rest of the shop and the building.

CoJ firefighters managed to put out the fire before significant damage could be done.

Upon the Roodepoort Record’s arrival at the scene, traffic at the already busy shopping centre entrance on CR Swart Road was severely affected. Neighbourhood watch members had blocked off a large part of the shopping centre parking lot and were directing traffic.

According to one Checkers employee, the fire was limited to the butchery area and no damage has occurred elsewhere.

CoJ Emergency Services as well as private firefighting entities responded to the fire at Checkers Wilrogate.

The Record has approached the Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Olile Khumalo, who confirmed the incident.

“Our units responded to the incident and managed to contain the fire before significant damage could be done,” she says.

She confirmed that no injuries were reported, and added that an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
