E-hailing cab driver leaves his job to pursue music

Local Artist Minolah talks about his journey and the importance of following dreams.

There is a quote that says, “Ignoring your passion is slow suicide. Never ignore what your heart pumps for,” and that encouraged Roodepoort Record journalist Nkosephayo Vilakazi to write about a former e-hailing cab driver who left his full-time job to pursue his love for music.

Thabo Segoana, also known as Minolah (which means music), shared that he has always been a creative force since the age of 10, but he was discouraged from pursuing this path and was advised to get a more stable career, as music was seen as unprofitable. Despite his passion, he pushed his dreams to the back of his mind, only to rediscover them later in life after a terrible accident as an e-hailing cab driver.

“The first time I realised I was creative was when international artist Lil Wayne released one of his songs, A Milli, and I would rap word-for-word and have a battle with my friends to see who would do it best.”

Like many of us who finished matric without knowing which career to pursue, Minolah took a gap year, hoping to maybe qualify for university later.

At the peak of e-hailing services in South Africa in 2019, Minolah jumped in and seized the opportunity to earn a living for himself. He made a name for himself as the ‘dopest driver’ because he played vibey and good music for his clients. In March 2022, he was involved in a terrible crash and his car was written off. He described that moment as a redirection of his life.

“I was always unhappy as a driver, and I fell into depression during that time. So I took the money I got from insurance and invested it in my passion, and I bought myself studio equipment to invest in my passion.”

Minolah is currently making waves as a young and upcoming artist with over 3 000 followers on Instagram and is using his rap game as a message to other people to always follow their dreams regardless of their socio-economic background.
