Fire destroys homes in Zandspruit informal settlement
Zandspruit residents receive generous donations after devastating fire destroys their homes.
In the wake of a devastating fire that swept through the Zandspruit informal settlement on Sunday, January 26, Ashful Aid sprang into action to provide critical assistance to those affected.
Ashful Aid is a non-profit humanitarian organisation that provides aid and relief to communities. According to Ashful Aid’s operations coordinator Imran Haffajee, the fire left multiple families without homes and in dire need of assistance.
Fortunately, none of the community members sustained any injuries, but all their belongings were destroyed by the fire, leaving them helpless and with no place to sleep.

With the assistance of firefighters, ward counselors, and various community members, Ashful Aid generously provided the affected members with food parcels, blankets, and mattresses, with an additional temporary place to sleep.
“Our hearts go out to the affected families and individuals who have lost their homes and belongings in this tragic fire. “We cannot begin to imagine what they are experiencing, which is why we are dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities in times of crisis.
“Until we find a permanent solution for the affected individuals, we urge communities to reach out and assist one another in these troubled times “, Haffejee said. As the members of Zandspruit begin the long process of recovery, they rely on Ashful Aid and various community members standing alongside them.
The Roodepoort Northsider reached out to Ward 114 councillor David Mangena for comment, and no response was given prior to the article being published.
