Foster mom receives donation for her medical bills

Silverstar and Hot Cares step up for founder of the Just in time Baby Sanctuary.

Georgina Caetano, founder of the Just in Time Baby Sanctuary, has received a generous donation from Silverstar and the Hot Cares Foundation toward her medical bills.

Last December, Georgina’s health took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening septicemia caused by an undiagnosed chronic kidney infection.

“I remember waking up around 02:00 feeling very nauseous, with an upset stomach and breathing difficulties. I was up the whole night trying to figure out what was wrong with me; however, my condition worsened, and at 05:00, I asked one of my helpers to call an ambulance, and I was rushed to the hospital.

“I was in a coma for four days. Doctors told me that if I hadn’t gotten to the hospital in time, I wouldn’t have made it,” says Georgina.

Fortunately, doctors managed to stabilise her condition, and she was discharged from the hospital on December 23.

Her friends started a BackaBuddy account to support her medical bills, as her journey to recovery still required ongoing medical care and consultations with specialists. Unbeknownst, her medical insurance only covers accidents, not medical emergencies, leaving her with a staggering hospital bill.

The BackaBuddy fundraising turned out great, raising about R55 000, and she managed to secure a loan to cover part of the expense, but she was still left with an additional R20 165.47 in outstanding medical costs.

Georgina has been a foster mom for about a decade, and Silverstar and Hot Cares acknowledged the invaluable role she plays in these children’s lives.

“In recognition of her tireless dedication, Silverstar is covering Georgina’s outstanding medical fees in full. But they didn’t stop there. To give Georgina and her foster children a well-deserved break, they are treating them to a special dinner and show at Silverstar, allowing them to create joyful memories together,” a statement from Hot Cares reads.

A tearful Georgina was overwhelmed and thanked everyone who contributed to her BackaBuddy account as well as Silverstar with Hot Cares for helping pay her hospital bill.

“There’s still R80 000 outstanding; however, this donation went a long way, and I’m feeling much better,” she says.
