Region C brings Mandela Day spirit to Queen Butterfly Foundation

In celebration of Mandela Day, Region C officials visited the Queen Butterfly Foundation in Discovery, offering support to individuals with disabilities through acts of service and compassion.

In honour of Mandela Day, the City of Johannesburg’s Region C Community Relations and Urban Management (Crum) team visited the Queen Butterfly Foundation in Discovery to show support for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

The foundation provides a refuge for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. Region C’s ward councillor Johannes Goosen, regional director Mlamleli Belot, and representatives from various city agencies and municipal bodies were present to commemorate the day.

Goosen acknowledged the foundation’s ongoing work and expressed gratitude to all who gave their 67 minutes in the spirit of Ubuntu. Activities on the day included composting, vegetable planting, garden pruning, and decorative improvements. Parts of the facility were also painted. These acts of kindness not only enhanced the environment but also uplifted the spirits of both staff and residents.

“I am touched and honoured to be here,” said Mlamleli.

He also shared thoughts on how citizens can better support people living with disabilities.

“This serves as a reminder that we need to have compassion. We must show solidarity with those battling mental struggles and those who are marginalised and downtrodden,” said Mlamleli.

In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Region C demonstrated once again that compassion and a little time can make a meaningful difference.
