Sophiatown police search for family of baby found near N1 bridge

Authorities and the Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative are appealing to the public for help to identify a toddler found near 14th Avenue.

Authorities are urging the community to help locate the family or legal guardians of a baby boy, estimated to be 13 or 14 months old, who was found underneath a bridge on 14th Avenue and the N1 Western Bypass on Sunday, October 18.

The Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative (VCSI) issued an appeal identifying the child as ‘Baby Joe’, with the Sophiatown SAPS Social Crime Prevention unit listed as the police contact for information.

Anyone with information that could help identify the child’s family is urged to contact investigating officer Constable Gisella Lourens on 063 935 8496 or send an anonymous tip via WhatsApp or SMS to the same number.

Members of the public are requested to share identifying details privately with authorities to protect the child’s safety and privacy. Anyone claiming to be a family member will be required to undergo verification procedures.

Authorities can be reached through Constable Lourens on 063 935 8496, the VCSI dedicated mobile line on 074 02 10111, or the shift commander on 079 517 8052.
