Western’s hockey club on hold for the 2021 season

All players who made payments in the 2020 season are advised by the club to contact them for the purpose of arranging a full refund.

fter long lengthy discussions, the Western’s hockey club revealed on Tuesday ,5 January that they have taken the decision to put the 2021 season on hold due to the Covid-19 uncertainty and until the club is able to secure a permanent venue.

The decision comes after the club’s committee organised a meeting where a brainstorming session for the 2021 was held.

“As you know the 2019 season, although successful and keeping within the Roodepoort area, there were still challenges with regards to the venues. We did hold training sessions at Hoërskool Monument and at Trinity Randpark but unfortunately they did not fall into the Roodepoort area,” said Western Hockey Club Chairlady, Tracey Morton.

The club also revealed that they have a proposal and a commitment from a school within the Roodepoort area but due to Covid-19 the construction of their Astroturf has been put on hold.

“We have a verbal commitment from the school that once this Astro is completed and functional we will resume negotiations and then hopefully will have found a home ground for Westerns and then will re-open our club,” added Tracey.

The club is strongly within the belief that there is a huge void in the Roodepoort area for potential hockey players and once a venue is secured they will be able to support those players

All players who made payments in the 2020 season are advised by the club to contact them for the purpose of arranging a full refund.

“We would like to thank Southern Gauteng Junior Hockey (SGJH) league for their support and guidance during our 2019 season and we will hopefully be back by 2022,” concluded Tracey.
