SA’s best athletics school crowned in Ruimsig

At the end of the day Hoërskool Menlopark High School was crowned South Africa’s best athletics school at the 2022 Twizza Super School Series National Final.

Despite the torrential downpour threatening to halt the 2022 Twizza Super School Series National Final on Saturday, February 19, action finally got underway with athletes geared up and excited for competition.

An impressive 77 teams from 59 schools went the distance at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium.

Hoërskool Menlopark High School proved to be a force to be reckoned with, claiming gold in all three categories of the competition. They were the Boys, Girls and Combined winners, and the school was crowned South Africa’s best athletics school.

Prestige College finished second in the Boys Team Category, and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) was placed third.

Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool finished second in the Girls Team Category, while Prestige College was placed third.

In the Combined Winners competition, Prestige College finished second and Helpmekaar Kollege finished in third place.

“We had an amazing day. It meant a lot to me to be able to represent my school today. I really didn’t expect the competition to be as tough as it was, I thought we would be placed second or third, so it feels amazing being crowned the best Boys Team. I’m glad to take the trophy home. The meeting was absolutely fantastic, and I think we will be back with a bang next year,” said Aiden Smith, the Hoërskool Menlopark High School Boys Team captain who was placed second in the Boys U/19 shot put, and fifth in the discus.

According to Lesedi Khunou, the Hoërskool Menlopark High School Girls Team captain, the Twizza Super School Series is a great platform for learners and athletes to reach a higher level.

“Representing my school here today was both overwhelming and stressful. Our team tried to enjoy the meeting more than just putting pressure on ourselves to win. Being crowned the best Girls Team is an amazing feeling, but this is actually where the hard work starts,” said Lesedi, who claimed gold in the Girls U/19 discus and was placed second in the shot put.

“SA’s up and coming track and field stars definitely brought the heat today, and we had front-row seats. The competition was nail-biting from start to finish with team members giving their all for their schools and teammates. A big congratulations to all the athletes who participated. You are all winners. Well done to Hoërskool Menlopark High School for your dominant victory across all three categories of the event,” said Lance Coertzen, Twizza Group Marketing Manager.

The Twizza Super School Series is an Athletics South Africa (ASA) sanctioned event that was launched in 2019 and has quickly become a highlight on schools’ athletics calendar.
