Community encouraged to take on Ju-Jitsu for self-defence

Shunkenkan Ju-Jitsu opens on Tuesday, January 17 and for free lessons members of the community are encouraged to contact Sensei Van De Werken to book their spot or find out more about the club.

Shunkenkan Ju-Jitsu, a traditional martial arts club based in Horison not only teaches one self-defence skills, which are very important in today’s world, but also instils confidence and a positive self-image.

According to Sensei Adrian van de Werken who has lofty ambitions for his students and wants them to reach their full potential, the sport is the best system to help against bullying.

Shunkenkan Ju-Jitsu was established in 2012 in Florida and currently train at 34b Georginia Street, Horison.

The club trains on Tuesdays and Thursday’s evening from 17:00 and will be having a member special for 2023 for those who join in January will train for free in February.

“On January 17 we will be hosting an open day for the public and students alike, come meet the team and do a bit of jujitsu, its free and a lot of fun. We, as a martial arts club, want to bring Ju-jitsu to the people of Roodepoort, Ju-jitsu is for everyone and anyone. Young and old can practice and benefit from Ju-jitsu, we practice the art of Japanese Ju-jitsu and we focus on self-defence and discipline,” said Van De Werken.

Sempai Gerrit Sandrock is the coach for the junior class with the assistance of Ivana Meyer who is a junior coach.

“It is never too late to start Ju-jitsu; it is one of the best investments you can make in the life of your child and as an adult enrich your life, start 2023 as part of the Shunkenkan Ju-jitsu family,” said Van De Werken.
