The three-day event will take place in Cape Town where the children will duke it out to be crowned champions.

Nine members from the KJK Judo Club will be competing at the South African Schools Tournament.

The judoka will go to Cape Town where they will duke it out for the title of champion in one of the three categories of the tournament from October 4 to 6.

Sensei Katja Bruwer explained the first category is that of the SA Schools Kata Competition which will be on October 4. Four pairs will be competing, including Johvan Taljaardt and Retief Brand along with Adam Williams and Justin Janse van Rensburg, who will be doing Katame No Kata which is the grappling Kata. Liam Page and Janu Dubber along with Nico Sheppard and Xander van der Watt will be doing the Kime No Kata which is self-defense kata with weapons.

On October 5 the SA Schools Novice Tournament will take place for children who haven’t competed on the national level. Johvan, Retief, Adam and Justin will compete in this category.

The third category is that of the SA Schools Tournament for Advanced Judoka, which will be on October 6. This is for the children who have competed at a national level. In this category, Janu, Xander, Liam, Nico, Josua and Justin will be competing.

Katja explained Justin is still a novice, however, his improvement in the past three to four months was ‘phenomenal’ therefore they decided to enter him into the advanced event.

She concluded, “All are training very hard and are very excited about the upcoming events.”
