Roodepoort karate academy earns 14 medals at ISMAA Championships

Badgers Karate Academy's young competitors impress in Kata and Kumite with a 14-medal haul.

Badgers Karate Academy delivered an impressive performance at the International Shorei Martial Arts Academy (ISMAA) Championships held on June 20, with its athletes bringing home 14 medals.

Competing in both Kata and Kumite divisions, the team showcased its talent, discipline and determination against strong competition. The team secured five gold, four silver and five bronze medals, highlighting the academy’s growing strength in the sport.

Sensei Danika Stevens-Kotze, who is the head of the academy, praised the team’s efforts, saying the results were about much more than the medals.

“Our athletes competed with great determination and discipline in both the kata and kumite divisions, showcasing not only their technical ability but also their strong spirit and sportsmanship throughout the event. Each competitor represented Roodepoort with pride and truly stepped up under pressure.

“Beyond the medals, what stood out most was the growth, confidence and resilience displayed by each athlete. It was a powerful reflection of their hard work, dedication and commitment during training.”

Stevens-Kotze added that the championships provided valuable experience for the athletes and served as motivation as they continue preparing for future competitions.

This achievement comes after another impressive win at the Fourways Challenge Interclub Tournament, held in Midrand in May, where five karateka from the team returned home with a haul of medals consisting of three gold, two silver and three bronze.
